Bamboo

Bamboo is super versatile. So I use them to make a bean trellis. This time, I’m gonna take thin Japanese bamboos instead of fat Chinese “moso” bamboos.

Improvised kidney bean trellis. It’s about 2 meter high. Not so beautiful but it’s good enough.

At once, kidney beans began to entwine their vines.

I also put a permeable fabric on soy beans to protect them from bugs.

After a couple of days rain, Shiitake mushrooms bore their fruits.

And young shoots of bamboo showed their faces, too.

It’s time to dig them up.

We often boil bamboo shoots with soy, fishy soup stock and with some sugar maybe. They are so tender and crunchy at the same time. They bring us the joy of Spring with their fantastic smelling. There is nothing better than freshly cooked bamboo shoots in this season, I can say.

Bamboo forest needs to be well cared. Otherwise, it goes wild and each bamboo comes out too close.

When bamboos come out too close, they might get stand decayed.

In order to make the bamboo forest well conditioned and let the sun light shine down more on the vegetable garden, I spend most of my time to cut down bamboos.

After several hour work, I laid down on a bed made of bamboo branches.

And I felt quite cozy. It was kind of like time goes slower here in the garden.

Maple leaves turned red.

Ume trees put forth buds. And we had the first frost last night.

Today, I cut down some bamboos, because they were shading the garden.

My father with a hatchet came to help. I liked his wearing a mod parka.

What a diversity. I really love this forest. O.K. I’m gonna make something fancy with bamboo quick.

First, I laid a bamboo down and cut it into pieces.

Then I split them with a hatchet like so.

And I improvised a bamboo fence. Quite oriental, isn’t it? What nice about bamboo is its ease of processing, flexibility and durability. Bamboo is really really versatile. I sometimes will show you more usage of it.

I have no doubt bamboo is a versatile plant.

You can make a seeding grid with it and seed more accurately. I sowed burdock seeds in this way.

You also can use bamboo grass like I mulched horse beans and radishes with it. I call this bamboo mulch.

Meanwhile, dandelions began to bloom. Nature really goes quick.
